Founder Crystal Baetz
Sargent First Class Crystal Baetz, a U.S. Army Reserve Military Police Soldier with the 603rd Military Police Company in Belton, Missouri, evacuates her partner, weighing over 200 pounds, from danger during a firefighter training exercise at the Highland Park Fire Department in Highland Park, Michigan, on October 13. This drill is designed to prepare firefighters to locate and rescue fellow firefighters who have become incapacitated. Throughout the training, Baetz carried her standard 80-pound gear load, managed a full-sized fire hose, wore a gas mask, and operated blindfolded to simulate navigating a smoke- and carbon dioxide-filled environment. Baetz is the first female interior firefighter at this station. Additionally, she serves as a 911 dispatcher and is a Level Four qualified combatives instructor.
Founder Paul Baetz
Paul Baetz is a Highland Park firefighter with many years of service, a retired Army veteran, and a Level 4 combative instructor. Paul serves as an instructor here at The Grey and holds a two-stripe purple belt as a dedicated practitioner.
Blackbelt instructor Justin Mchugh
Justin McHugh received his black belt under Victor "El Torito" Torres. With 15 years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience, he has secured multiple victories in IBJJF tournaments. Justin graduated from Alma College in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, where he was a four-year All-Conference football athlete. Boasting 20 years of educational experience, he is deeply committed to instructing those eager to master the art of Submission Grappling.

Ralph White has been an integral member of the martial arts community for over 15 years. He began his journey in Karate, specifically studying Moo Duk Kwan alongside his two sons, ultimately achieving the rank of black belt. Transitioning into coaching, Ralph has served as a corner coach for his sons and numerous fighters at both karate tournaments and cage matches. For the past six years, he has been dedicated to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, earning a purple belt and serving as an instructor here at The Grey. Ralph is deeply passionate about martial arts and takes great pride in teaching self-defense and guiding students through the belt progression in Jiu-Jitsu. He is committed to fostering the growth and preservation of martial arts for future generations.

Assistant Instructor Mike Vanassen
Sargeant Michael VanAssen is presently assigned to the 3-238th Aviation Regiment of the Michigan Army National Guard. He holds a two-stripe blue belt and has been training for over three years. As a dedicated father of four, he trains alongside two of his children. With more than a year of instructional experience, he takes particular pleasure in emphasizing the strategic nuances of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

WALTER “CASCÃO” VITAL IS A 5TH DEGREE BLACK BELT UNDER MARIO SUKATA AND FABIO SANTOS. HE POSSESSES OVER 30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE TEACHING AND COMPETING IN BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU.
Lineage: Conde Maeda, Carlos GRACIE Senior, CARLSON GRACIE, Gutemberg Melo, Mario Sukata.
He has earned more than 150 titles in competition, including:
- 2-time World Champion,
- 2-time Pan American Champion,
- 8-time US National Champion,
- 5-time undefeated MMA fighter, all submissions in the first round,
- 21 IBJJF Gold Medals,
- 13 NABJJF Gold Medals,
- 3 UAEJJF Gold Medals,
- 5 NAGA Belt Titles,
- 3 Grapplers Quest Belt Titles,
- 7 Gold Medals at UFC BJJ Tournament.
The Cascao BJJ system currently boasts approximately 30 black belts across its affiliated schools in Brazil, the USA, and Hawaii. Residing in Las Vegas since 2004, I highly recommend visiting this gym if you are in the area.
